It's Kind of a Funny Story

Watch It! 8.5 out of 10
Express Lane (Review in 20 words or less):
An inspiring story about finding your passion and enjoying life even when it feels like you have no hope.

Genre: Dramatic Comedy
Brief Synopsis:
Craig, a 16 year old kid contemplating suicide, checks himself into a mental health clinic.  He is stressed about many things a normal 16 year old would be stressed out about:  Girls, grades, parent’s expectations and girls.  Upon admission he finds out the teen psyche wing is undergoing renovations so he has will be living in the adult psyche wing.  There he meets a group of interesting characters which help him gain new perspective on his life.  Shockingly enough he meets a teen girl who is also a patient in the psyche wing who becomes his romantic interest throughout the movie.  As if no one saw that coming.

Initial Reaction:
I first thought to myself, “Seriously Craig? Grow a pair.  Your only 16 and your problems aren’t that bad.  You don’t have to worry about paying for ANYTHING, you have a nice place to live and you have a good family that supports you.  This kid’s kind of a bitch.”

Another Look:
Taking the focus off of the seemingly minor problems Craig has, I took a step back and look at the bigger picture and found a movie worth watching.  Craig’s character is very relateable to everyone.  There have been times in everyone’s life they have felt that things just keep piling up and you feel buried underneath it all.  I know I’ve felt like that more than a few times.   Watching the movie through that lens I started to appreciate and understand the journey Craig is going through.

Thankfully there is no quick fix.  The other patients help Craig realizing this is the beginning of his journey and he still has problems to face.  I appreciate this because I hate watching an entire movie and getting to a bullshit ending (i.e. the movie Knowing with Nicholas Cage).  That really pisses me off and makes me hate that movie.

Underlying Message:
This movie focuses on finding the things in life that make you “want to get out of the bed in the morning” (referencing Craig’s bed ridden roommate).  Find things in life that you feel passionate about.  In the movie the psychologist recites the serenity prayer to Craig in one of their sessions which really sums up the overall message in the movie.  “Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference between the two.”  Enjoy the little things in life that make you happy.

Should You (the reader) Watch This Movie?:
YES: If you are willing to go beyond the story and see the underlying message this movie offers and wonder how it applies to your own life.
NO: If you just want to be an entertained observer.

Final Thoughts:
